"I can watch her for fever and make sure she takes her medicine, but I highly doubt she's going to let me change her dressing or watch her bullet area."
"No?" Franklin sounded surprised. "I got the impression the two of you wereahwellclose."
"Not as close as you two." Chris heard the jealousy in his voice and winced. He'd never been jealous in his life, and he didn't like the feeling now.
Franklin threw a quick glance over his shoulder before he returned his attention to the trail. Though the darkness hid the man's expression, Chris heard the smile in the doctor's voice. "Me? You've got the wrong idea there. There's nothing between D.J. and me but a very old and dear friendship. We might have made it more once, but she wasn't capable of the kind of relationship I needed."
"And you think she's capable of one now?"
"Maybe. She can't stay inside the shell of ice she's put around herself forever. I figured out a long time ago she needed a different kind of man than I could ever be. I'm not saying I don't love her; I do. But not the way you do."
"Me? I think you've got the wrong idea."
"Do I? Well, we'll see. D.J.'s very special. She's had a tough time, and she's become tough because of it. But she's not as emotionless as she'd like everyone to believe."
